At just over 4, my twin nephews didn’t quite get the ‘100% recycled paper’, or the it’s made using veggie inks…however they loved the story – and started calling me the Sluggard lol

  2. Fatima De Jesus

    I loved the storyline!
This is one of those books that you can’t put down until you have read it to the very end.
Moreover, it touches on important concepts such as friendship, trust and persistence. The Ants never gave up until they gain the trust of the Sluggard, hence a beautiful friendship was created!
As an adult, I love the idea that it was printed using recycled paper and vegetable-based inks.

I couldn’t wait to get hold of a copy of this book. There’s so much I love about it. The illustrations are bright, detailed and beautifully enhance the story. I loved that the story was all in rhyme. It is a well put together story that packs a mighty message – building trust and friendship, we can all find a place where we belong, and where we can be encouraged to use our gifts. I really resonated with the Sluggard, who is not in fact lazy, but needs encouragement to try. In fact, I am already thinking of how I might like to use the book for storytelling projects. What a brilliant book. I love that it is printed just about as ethically as it possible. I’m already making a list of who I’m buying a copy of this book for!

My two girls (aged 18 months and 4) love this book! It’s a lovely story with a great moral and is easy for kids to follow with its simple words and rhyming pattern. The drawings are vibrant and fun and it’s all the more rewarding to know that the book has been ethically produced as well. We look forward to more stories from the author!

Bought this as a birthday present for my husband because he’s a friend of Steve’s and I knew he’d like to support him. It’s has quickly become a favourite with our three year old – he says: “let’s read your birthday book daddy!” We’ve invested in some more for Christmas presents.

The Sluggard and the Ants is a simple rhyming tale inspired by a biblical quote from Proverbs. The story is illustrated with brightly coloured pictures showing the ants hard at work helping the sad sluggard to feel happier. The publisher Happy Pineapple has gone out of their way to make sure the book has been produced to high environmental standards. It has been printed in the UK using vegetable based inks on recycled paper, and 10% of pre-tax profits are donated to the Masaka Recycling Initiative in Uganda. The story gently encourages children to engage with peers who are feeling low, and to lead by example. Although the rhyming scheme feels a little clunky at times, the overall message is uplifting. My four-year-old loves the naive illustration style, and laughed out loud at the page where the ants are doing circus tricks to cheer up the sluggard.

Sharing this in an assembly with Years 1, 2 and 3 was a delight! The children loved the illustrations and the characters. They really engaged with the motivating ants but also empathised with the down-hearted sluggard. It’s a great book to promote kindness, friendship and awareness of others’ feelings. Also, the illustrations and repetitive patterns on each page have provided fun inspiring, alternatives to tracing, handwriting and drawing activities! I can’t wait for another Happy Pineapple book … or maybe even another ant or sluggardly adventure!!
